» Inflammatory bowel disease
Albumin is the major protein in human plasma (40-60%). It is synthesized in the liver depending on protein uptake. Albumin in fecal samples indicates an inflammatory reaction combined with intestinal bleeding. Elevated levels of albumin and hemoglobin in stool are not only found in connection with colorectal carcinomas, but also with polyps and in connection with chronic inflammatory diseases (Morbus Crohn and Colitis Ulcerosa).
