The only glycosidic activity in pancreatic fluid is present in amylase. Amylase represents 5-6 % of the total protein in the pancreatic secretions, and its concentration in feces reflects exocrine pancreatic function. The immunoluminometric assay for fecal pancreatic amylase is a simple, non-invasive exocrine pancreatic function test, which is feasible in most laboratories. The test is highly specific for human fecal pancreatic amylase because it utilizes monoclonal antibodies.  The test can be used with pancreatic enzyme therapy, in contrast to fecal chymotrypsin tests. The sensitivity found was good compared with elastase, fecal fat, and fecal chymotrypsin tests.
